Proper Maintenance of your sandpit

It is important to keep up regular maintenance of your sandpits to ensure their longevity. Here are just a few things parents need to do to ensure their kids space lasts all throughout childhood.

Cleaning

Remove any and all toys and pick out any visible pieces of debris prior to cleaning. To properly clean your child's sandpit, you will need the following items:

  • Rake or Shovel

  • Sieve (or a sand sifter)

  • Warm soapy water

  • Non-abrasive sponge

  • Vinegar or a mild disinfectant

For regular cleaning, you do not need to remove/replace the sand completely, just use a rake or shovel to level out the sand, sifting for any additional debris. On top of this, keep an eye out for any potential contaminants from animals in the sand.

Once the sand has been cleared, clean the frame with warm soapy water and non-abrasive sponge, allowing time to air dry. Cleaning should be carried out depending on usage, but every few months is a good measurement to follow.

Sand Replacement

For personal use, we recommend replacing the sand in your sandpit annually to ensure a clean and sanitary play space for your child/children.

Covering your Sandpits

Whilst all our available sandpits come with a lid to keep sand cleaner and dry, you may want additional covering for your sandpits when not in use. If this is the case, a waterproof covering or tarp is recommended.

Common Questions Answered

Addressing your Concerns

We understand that potential issues can arise with any wooden garden structure. Here are some common problems with sandpits and play sand, and how we can help you resolve them.

  • Splits in the timber (safety hazard for kids) - A very common and often worrying concern when it comes to your child's safety. You can rest assured knowing that pressure-treated timber is much sturdier than other timber types, much less prone to splits or breakages.

  • Sand in the sandpit getting wet - If the play sand in your sandpit gets wet, first clear up any sitting water before raking through the sand to declump. Use old towels to absorb any moisture and leave the pit uncovered during dry weather to air dry.

  • Different uses after kids grow up - There are many different uses for the sandpits once the kids have all grown up. Our best example is, if weed matting has been placed underneath, then you have an excellent and spacious planter to make a raised plant bed.
