Our gabion systems consist simply of sturdy anthracite grey metal sheets which you can use to create walls, fences, posts, furniture, and more. These durable structures are important for retaining surrounding areas of your home, especially if you live in a mountain area or that has sloping terrains.

Mesh Screens

Gabion Installation Guide

When it comes to the installation of these products, it is important to get it installed properly as they cannot be done in a DIY fashion. Here are some of the crucial details you need to know:

Installation guide

To properly install your gabion system, you will need the following supplies and tools as standard:

• Gabion sheet frames

• Galvanized rings (to secure the frames)

• Stone or Aggregate (for filling gabions)

• Shovel

• Wire cutters

• Gabion Plier (or regular pliers)

• Spirit Level

• Gloves and Safety gear

Start by preparing the site for construction, making sure to clear and level the desired ground. Next, you will need to excavate a trench, around 10-20% of the depth of the constructed gabion. You can optionally install a base of gravel or concrete prior to the next step as well.

Next, measure out and follow the instructions for your gabions and construct accordingly, ensuring all the edges and corners are secure before placing them inside the trenched area. Once this is done, you can fill your gabion baskets with stones or aggregate.

Taller structures of gabions may require extra steps and items to install, including iron tubes for additional support.

Finally, do completion checks on all the installed gabions, testing stability. To maintain longevity, edges must be treated with a zinc-based coating to prevent any corrosion.

Maintenance tips

It is important to keep your gabion systems and mesh items maintained properly to ensure their longevity. Occasionally, rings and wire may need re-tightening to keep the structure secured. Also keep an eye out for weed and vegetation growth that can inhibit the gabion's effectiveness, cutting back and removing as a preventative measure.

• Corrosion and rust forming on the metal: A common concern with any metal product. When it comes to our mesh screens and gabions, it is important to treat the edges with a zinc-based coating to prevent any corrosion.

• Difficulties with the installation: Given the size of these structures, fears about making a fault when installing is common. However, gabions are a breath of fresh air being very straightforward to install.

• Potential Drainage issues with gabion: Drainage is nothing to be worried about due to the inherent nature of these structures. Filled with gaps in the mesh screens and the crevices formed by the stones/aggregate, water can drain very well through the gabion system.

• Weed problems and weed control: On the other hand, drainage can be inhibited if weeds and plants are allowed to grow, blocking the gaps.

• The wires in my mesh screen bending/breaking: The wires in the mesh screen are highly durable, though over time some of the galvanised rings may weaken. It is worth inspecting the connections to see if any rings need replacing or parts being reinforced.

• Once the Gabion is made, the stones can’t be replaced: Partial deconstruction of the gabion may be required, and it is fairly labour intensive, but you can replace the stones once built.
