Timber Decking

Ideas for decking with timber logs:

Herringbone decking: The most classic and widespread design, always a good option when you want a fancy flooring design and not too expensive.

Parquet decking: a very popular decking option in Spain, and other mediterranean countries. Most of the houses and traditional exteriors have this design, can be done with small tiles but its also aplicable to larger tiles and boards.

• Deck paint offers an extensive color palette along with a robust finish that can fully transform your deck’s appearance.

• In contrast, decking stains provide transparency that reveals the wood grain’s inherent charm.

• Typically demanding less frequent touch-ups, deck paints may endure up to five years before needing reapplication—more enduring than stains which might require more regular maintenance.

• Whether your wood surface is pristine or in need of repair will influence which product best serves protection and extends life span purposes.

Which joists do we have?

We at Tuin say, rather save on the plank thickness, than on the foundation of your decking. So for example, rather a 21 mm thick decking board with a good foundation, than a 25 or 28 mm board with a poor foundation. For 18 and 19 mm boards, always place the joists every 35 cm center to center. For 21-28 mm boards, keep a maximum of 40 cm center-to-center distance between your beams. This way your deck boards will not spring and more importantly, your boards will work less and you will keep a stable deck.

Below you will find advice on the use of sub-structure beams per application:

• 30 x 65 mm - Often chosen for balconies or roof terraces with little height

• 40 x 60 mm - Often used “flat” on a stone subfloor for terraces with less intensive use

• 45 x 70 mm - Often used “standing” on a 6x6 picket post (most popular)

• 45 x 90 mm - Often used “standing” on stone floor or picket posts as a lower rail

• 50 x 100 mm - Often chosen for extra strength for heavy-duty decking

• 50 x 150 mm - Suitable for use when building scaffolding by the water
